After only one night with the Sergeants, he rode to Kaunaumeek and spent his first night on the mission-field sleeping on ‘a little heap of straw’. All day long he was distressed with inward trials and distresses. As he reflected upon the awesome task before him he cried out, ‘Oh that God would help me!’ During the first week of his work in the new station, he felt lonely and disconsolate.
